Hello and welcome to the Hickey and Dobson blog, a place I use for showcasing new furniture as well as sharing some of the things I've been up to lately.
My name is Mary and I'm a vintage furniture/textile enthusiast, a passion which can be largely traced back to my grandmothers, Hilda Hickey and Margery Dobson, hence the name!
For as long as I can remember I have loved collecting old and chracterful pieces of furniture and bits and bobs for the home, I used to exasperate my Mum as a teenager with all thejunk treasures I came home with from car boot sales! As the years have passed my tastes have matured but not my love for all things vintage.
I've woven a rather unconvential career working as both a primary school teacher (until I wilted under the pressure) and then as a stylist and production manager for an interiors and lifestyle company. After a good five years in the interiors world, and armed with a City and Guilds diploma in upholstery, I now run my own small, one woman show, restoring beautiful, vintage chairs and sofas to their former glory, combining my mega fabric collection with the beautiful chairs I have found along the way.
So now I have done a full circle, I have returned to teaching two days a week and run my own business the rest of the time. I keep up to date with all things interior-sy through Hickey and Dobson and am also studying for a diploma in Interior Design. Making the leap of stopping working full time was a bit of a gamble but it's paid off and I find that now I get to run my own life a little more which is such a great feeling after years of working 9-5! Don't get me wrong, I do work very hard; evenings and weekends are definitely up for grabs when I have lots of orders to finish, but I get enormous satisfaction from creating the chairs and I get to sit in my garden of a sunny afternoon and read a book if that's what I choose to do!
I hope you like the chairs and enjoy the musings of my blog, if you would like to contact me please email...
